Tweed Regional Museum programs go pop for History Week

September kicks off with History Week throughout NSW and this year it’s a celebration of all things ‘Popular Culture’.

Tweed Regional Museum joins the celebrations with three major events during September - all part of the popular exhibition Tweed on Film, on show until 25 November.

“The theme for this year’s History Council of NSW History Week celebrations, on from 2-10 September, is a chance to showcase programs we’re offering as part of Tweed on Film’ Museum Director Judy Kean said.

I’m a Celebrity: get me into here! goes behind the scene of the UK production of this international reality TV phenomenon, which has been shooting in the Tweed for more than 20 years. The Museum, in partnership with Screenworks Northern Rivers, will host the series Production Manager for a ‘behind the scenes’ reveal and Q&A at the Museum on Thursday evening 14 September.

On Tuesday 26 September, ABC North Coast’s Catherine Marciniak offers budding digital storytellers the opportunity to hone their skills at a workshop hosted by Tweed Regional Museum.

See out September in popular culture heaven at a once only screening of the singalong version of Muriel’s Wedding, at the Regent Cinema Murwillumbah on Friday 29 September.

Muriel’s Wedding singalong is a Friends of the Tweed Regional Museum fundraiser and a rare opportunity to dress up and sing out loud, in public, with ABBA.

“The relationship between popular culture and history is a topical and interesting one,” Ms Kean said.

“How has popular culture changed over time? Who defines it, and why? How has the ‘digital age’ and 21st century technological change influenced popular culture? Have we entered a ‘new age’ of popular culture with audiences as creators, and more democratic modes of creative expression? Is history now part of popular culture?

“All of these questions are highly relevant to today’s museums and central to many of the exhibitions we’ll be presenting over the next couple of years.”

Event details, times, and bookings are available by contacting Tweed Regional Museum on (02) 6670 2493, at trm@tweed.nsw.gov.au, or by visiting museum.tweed.nsw.gov.au.

Bookings for all events are essential and tickets for the Muriel’s Wedding singalong can be bought at the Museum or online through the Regent Cinema at http://www.cinemaregent.com/
