Every ‘like’ and ‘share’ from fans of the Tweed Regional Museum’s social media platforms has been put to good use in the Museum’s first photographic-based exhibition, Liked & Shared, which opens next week.

Putting the past in the picture, the exhibition is a kaleidoscopic window looking back in time, seen through the lenses of popular local photographers who have captured the faces and places of the Tweed for more than a century.

Increasing social media engagement with the Museum’s digital collections inspired this new contemporary exhibition, which has been curated entirely by the Museum’s online community of more than 10,000 social media followers.

Liked & Shared showcases an historically significant and diverse selection of photographs and videos posted on social media over the past 3 years. Visitors can discover which images received the most Facebook and Instagram likes, shares and social commentary. Some were so popular, they went viral!

Museum Director Molly Green said the Museum’s growing online community was an important segment of its audience.

“It has been fascinating to see what parts of our collection of more than 100,000 photographs have been the most loved online,” Ms Green said.

“The Museum collects stories to record where we came from, who we are now and how we are forging pathways for the future. How we collect these stories today is different to the past.

“We have technology at our fingertips to create, document and share – engaging with each other in new and exciting ways.”

Liked & Shared is an interactive exhibition that inspires reflection and considers the connections between photography, place and identity.

The exhibition captures the breadth and imagery of the Tweed Shire's natural wonders, villages and coastal townships, iconic local businesses, early European settlers, war heroes, holidaymakers, community leaders, sporting stars and more.

Visitors can interact with the exhibition via a giant connective screen, which adds to the display in real time.

Liked & Shared opens at Tweed Regional Museum, Murwillumbah on Tuesday 8 February and shows until Saturday 25 June 2022.
