Tweed tales tall and true

Tweed Regional Museum, in conjunction with Southern Cross Austereo, presents Tweed Tales Tall and True; quirky tales from Tweed’s history.

Listen to each story as it was heard on Gold FM, and read the full details to decide for yourself whether the tale is tall or true!

The Dellie

On 24 August 1941, the freighter Dellie voyaged between Tasmania and Brisbane with a crew of 15 and over 5000 cases of apples, chocolate and newspapers.

Edgar Percival

It would be hard for people to imagine now, but during the period from WW1 to the mid 1930s, aircraft made heavy use of both Greenmount and Kirra beaches.

Murwillumbah Swamp Beer

In April 2001 a semi-trailer carrying over 40,000 bottles of beer ran off the Pacific Highway near Murwillumbah.

Red Sunday

On 15 September 1907, at about 8.30 pm, Murwillumbah was shocked by the sight of a fire at Dainer’s Bakery.

Bunny Breillat

Arthur Cyril (Bunny) Breillat was a well known local musician, music teacher and local character. Bunny came to the Tweed in 1900 and was a founding member of the Murwillumbah Musical Festival Society.

The bank job

On 23 November 1978 Murwillumbah gained a new claim to fame, the location of Australia's biggest bank robbery.
