403-444 Zeolites

The zeolites have been grouped together, despite their different Dana numbers, to reflect their common association.

Natural zeolites are a diverse suite of minerals that form where volcanic rocks and ash layers react with alkaline groundwater.

Zeolites have a porous structure that can accommodate a wide variety of positively charged ions. They are known as 'molecular sieves' due to their ability to absorb, hold and release different chemicals and nutrients. Due to this ability many different zeolites have been synthetically created and are used in commercial applications and in products such as laundry detergent.
