The minerals that make up the halide class include chlorine, bromine, fluorine, and iodine, which are known as the halogen elements. These elements are combined with one or more metals to make up the mineral.

Minerals of the halide class all have relatively low hardness, can be transparent, have low specific gravities, have good cleavage, and are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
