Grow Make Eat celebrates Tweed's culinary history
Tweed Regional Museum Murwillumbah is giving visitors a unique opportunity to sink their teeth into history, with its latest exhibition, Grow Make Eat.
Grow Make Eat sings the praises of the Tweed’s growers, producers, makers and consumers in stories that weave together our shared culinary and agricultural past, present and future.
The exhibition features native foods, case studies on agricultural experimentation and a display of almost every food product manufactured in the Tweed Shire.
Explore stories of some unique ingredients, techniques and innovations and learn and appreciate what locals are making and eating.
The Museum has collaborated with local Aboriginal and South Sea Islander community members to record family stories of past and contemporary food practices. A selection of these will be part of the exhibition alongside a seasonal calendar.
As a unique feature of Grow Make Eat, the Museum is planning a series of ‘Eat the Exhibition’ tours between March and July, allowing visitors to enjoy the exhibition and sample some unique Tweed flavours along the way.
From ‘war cake’ made using an historical recipe based on what was available during war time rationing, to dragon fruit and locally-made drinks, tour participants will sample a small selection of items featured in the exhibition.
“The Museum’s collection and permanent exhibition covers historical stories related to banana growing, cane farming and dairying, for example, and we really wanted to also acknowledge the richness of contemporary activity,” Tweed Regional Museum Director Judy Kean said.
“There is so much to tell about growing, making and eating going on in the Tweed now, including great innovators and amazing variety. This exhibition is an introduction to just some of these stories.”
Grow Make Eat is on display at Tweed Regional Museum in Murwillumbah from Tuesday 2 March until Saturday 17 July 2021.
