Tweed Regional Museum, a new model for heritage management

Tweed River Regional Museum (our original name) was created in 2004 as a result of extensive community consultation and the signing of an historic Memorandum of Understanding between Tweed Shire Council and the Historical Societies of Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah and Uki and South Arm.

It was agreed that the formation of a single regional museum was the best way to ensure the sustainable development of the Historical Societies’ museums and collections. Development as a regional museum ensures that the collections and buildings receive the support and investment required by positioning the new unified museum as an integral part of Council’s cultural infrastructure, and by accessing funding for regional museums for capital works, the employment of professional staff, exhibition development and public programs.

Tweed Regional Museum continues to work in partnership with the Historical Societies, who operate from the branches of the Museum. The Historical Societies continue to have full access to the collections of the Museum for research and publishing, thus having the ability to fundraise and to continue to operate as independent organisations.
